Camino developer set on “first rate” Chrome for Mac

Mike Pinkerton, the principle developer behind Camino, has reaffirmed his commitment to the almost-veteran OS X browser, despite his role on the Google team that built Chrome.

Pinkerton said that the release of Chrome will have no impact on his plans for Camino, which in its previous guise as Chimera was one of the very first native OS X browsers.

Plans for Camino 2.0 are “underway and unchanged”, based on the latest version of Mozilla‘s Gecko rendering engine, as used by Firefox.

“There shouldn't be any talk of ‘doom’ or ‘gloom’ because really nothing has changed,” Pinkerton wrote on his Sucking less, on a budget blog. “People still download Camino and continue to send email to our feedback list saying how much they love the product this community has created. That's just as valid tomorrow as it was yesterday.”

As well as continuing to work on Camino, Pinkerton is focusing on developing a “first rate” version of Chrome for Mac users, though that may be some time off.

Pinkerton’s renewed commitment to using Gecko in Camino should banish any lingering suggestions that it may switch to Safari’s WebKit engine, which Chrome employs.
