Adobe bends pixels for new Photoshop effects
Posted on 18 Nov 2008 at 10:23
Adobe has released Pixel Blender plugin for Photoshop CS4, adding support for a range of new filters.
Pixel Blender is Adobe’s new technology designed to make it easier to create filters than can run in all its graphics applications. The software also runs in After Effects CS4 and Flash Player 10 and filters written for Flash, for example, will also work in Photoshop.
John Nack, senior product manager for Adobe Photoshop, anticipates that Photoshop users can expect an “explosion” in the number of available filters as well as enhancements to existing capabilities.
Indeed this is already the case. Nack notes that Photoshop’s Radial Blur and Mosaic filters have been criticised for the lack of a live preview; this is addressed by two filters included with the Pixel Blender download.
Filters are available from the Pixel Blender Exchange.
Nack does give one word of warning, however: this is a labs release (for which, read “beta”), so it’s a little less polished and a little more utilitarian than you would expect from a filter that's installed by default.
