Facebook and iPlayer top popularity poll

Facebook has become the most popular website amongst UK surfers, while iPlayer is the fastest rising, and recipes for cupcakes are the ones we're looking for the most. That's according to Google, who have just released the year-end results for the most searched for terms in 2008.

Our penchant for procrastination seems to be developing, as 'facebook' and 'youtube' are among the most popular and fastest rising search terms in Britain. Topping the list for fastest rising is 'iplayer' - BBC's TV on demand service.

'large hadron collider' was also among the fastest rising search terms, even surpassing 'obama'. US president-elect Obama may have won the presidential race, but he'll have to do with being less popular than former vice-president hopeful Sarah Palin, who became the fastest rising searched for person globally. Following his untimely death soon after his award-winning performance portrayal of The Joker in the Dark Knight, Heath Ledger was the second fastest rising searched-for personality worldwide.

'Cupcakes', 'meatballs' and 'rocky road' were popular among recipe seekers and Oasis were the hottest ticket in town.

Most Popular search terms in UK:

1 - facebook
2 - bbc
3 - youtube
4 - ebay
5 - games
6 - news
7 - hotmail
8 - bebo
9 - yahoo
10 - jobs
