Although last Monday (8th December) was hyped to be the busiest shopping day on the internet, the arrival of a slew of new bargains from retailers including WH Smiths, House of Fraser, Hamleys, Borders and Body Shop means that today is likely to emerge as this year's ecommerce "Mega Monday".

Cashback shopping website eDealsUK.com notes that savvy shoppers have been holding their nerve in a game of chicken with web shops, waiting for the biggest discounts. eDealsUK's marketing manager Nadeem Azam said: "Consumers are seeing big sales everywhere, and are confident online retailers will produce better and better deals the closer we get to Christmas. So this is encouraging them to leave their online Christmas shopping later than ever this year."

Azam added that that consumers now have so much confidence that online stores will deliver on time, they are prepared to take the risk of ordering online as late as the 22nd December. Discount code website MyVoucherCodes.co.uk expects yesterday and today to be the biggest online shopping day of 2008. The firm's managing director, Mark Pearson said: "The level of sales from the previous Sunday and Monday were phenomenal and more than we have ever seen before on any two given days but the levels of traffic and shoppers hunting for discounts has risen every day since then and we see no signs of it slowing.

"I am confident that our research and analysis is correct and in fact this Monday 15th will be the busiest ever experienced for online shopping. Many online retailers will be doing a little rain dance this weekend as a wet, windy and cold spell could drive people off the high street and onto the computers to get those last-minute presents".
