XSitePro 2 is a template-oriented web design application, much like an offline Mr Site.

You choose how your site will look from a range of options, then use a visual interface to drop in content and click a button to publish it to the web. However, the software's complexity places it somewhere between Mr Site and more serious software such as Adobe's Dreamweaver.

The level of customisation available is impressive. You don't have an entirely free reign, but the number of options will make the typical user's head swim. Practically every page component, from headers to images to fonts, can be edited and customised.

The templates are pretty good. They don't quite get away from creating a site that's obviously based on templates, but the results are visually appealing.

XSitePro 2 provides features for more advanced web page components, such as search fields, RSS syndication and galleries, most of which can be defined and activated with a few mouse clicks. A scheduling function provides some automation for updating pages.

We had some concerns, however. The application's code output could be better, as it sometimes caused problems in non-Microsoft browsers. More importantly, it requires a level of knowledge that more casual users might lack. Despite being fairly experienced, we found some components tricky to edit, and it's obvious that there's a lot of complexity tucked inside this initially accessible application.

XSitePro 2 isn't a five-minute fix for getting a website online, but it's a fairly inexpensive tool for serious home users and small businesses. With a little effort, you can create a site that suits your needs and looks good Users of the previous version will find the upgrade useful, but a little steep at $127 (around £86).
