YouTube offers download service

YouTube has begun testing a download feature on the video sharing site. The initial test has been carried out with Barack Obama's ChangeDotGov channel, where you can download the US president-elect's weekly address, as well as announcements, news on other events and political discussions from the Presidential Transition Team.

A YouTube spokesperson remained coy about the future of its new download service, but told Computer Shopper that it iin its early stages and is currently limited to being tested on the ChangeDotGov channel.

"This is just an extremely limited test," the spokesperson said. "It's too early to say (what the next step for the feature will be) at this point. I don't think we're quite at the stage just yet where we would speculate where this might go in future. We're just seeing how it goes for now."

The videos can be downloaded by click on a link entitled: "Click to download", under the video. It is downloaded as an H.264 file, at a bit rate of 460Kb/sec, which is higher quality than the standard 200Kb/sec YouTube videos, but not as high quality as YouTube's HD stream, which runs at 900Kb/sec.
