Empire Direct shuts down

Electronics retailer Empire Direct has shut down as a low level of sales and stock has forced the company into administration.

According to a statement released by administrator KPMG, the company has closed down its online store and 14 warehouse shops immediately. The statement suggests that the company ran out of cash or credit to buy new stock.

"The business is unable to trade in administration due to low stock levels and operating losses and accordingly the stores have been closed," read the statement.

Empire Direct said it would be getting in contact with customers who are awaiting delivery of their orders.

"The administrators are working hard to assess the position for customers who have made payments and not received goods. We will endeavour to contact these customers over the next few weeks."

Concerned customers can also call the company's helpline on 0871 472 9000 or email orderqueries@empiredirect.co.uk. However, Empire Direct has cautioned that it may not be able to respond to emails on the same day as they are received.

The company had been trading for 25 years and provided one of the few alternatives to DSGi's brands Currys, Dixons and PC World. DSGI is having its own problems as it saw sales drop over Christmas.
