Explore the ocean online

You can now explore the depths of the ocean using Google Earth, as the application has been enhanced to add detail to the two- thirds of the planet that lies underwater.
Google has introduced the added detail to the application, calling the enhancement Google Ocean. The tool provides users with a way to view changes to glaciers and underwater geography over time. Google said that Ocean is a powerful way to raise awareness about environmental issues, such as global warming.
Using photographs and video of marine life, from the National Geographic Society, Google Ocean allows internet surfers to dive under waves and explore the sea.
Google used sonar data from the US Navy, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association and others to create a visual representation of the landscape hidden beneath the sea.
"We have a much more detailed bathymetric map (the ocean floor), so you can actually drop below the surface and explore the nooks and crannies of the seafloor in 3D," said John Hanke, director of Google Earth and Maps in the official Google blog.
"While you're there you can explore thousands of data points including videos and images of ocean life, details on the best surf spots, logs of real ocean expeditions, and much more."
The company also unveiled a three-dimensional map of Mars based on satellite images and panoramic photos.
A new timeline feature has also been added to Google Earth, which allows you to view a succession of satellite images of the same location over several years, so you can track changes to the environment.
