Freesat TV to include BBC iPlayer
Posted on 27 Feb 2009 at 11:21
The BBC's iPlayer will be integrated into all Freesat set-top-boxes and TVs later this year. When launched, viewers will be able to watch the BBC's video-on-demand service without using a computer.
The on-demand TV service will be streamed over the internet and into Freesat devices using their built-in Ethernet ports, instead of being broadcast via the satellite signal that standard channels use.
At the time of writing, Freesat was unable to confirm how it will enable iPlayer on existing devices, but it's likely that an update will be sent over the satellite signal.
Although Freesat said it will add access to iPlayer later this year, a spokesman told Shopper that he could not give any specific dates and that there was still a lot of "technical and background work" that needs to be done before web-based video becomes a reality on Freesat devices.
