Philips casts doubt over 3D future

Philips has shut down its 3D technology research division and said that it has "no short to medium term plans" to produce 3D televisions for consumers.

The company's 3D research arm had been developing displays that used WOWvx technology, which allows viewers to watch 3D content on an LCD TV without the need for specialist glasses. Philips has now acknowledged that it will take a long time before these TVs are available at an attractive price for consumers.

"It is still something that we're closely monitoring in the long term but there's no short to medium term plans for a Philips consumer 3D TV business," Tina Withington, media relations manager at Philips told Shopper. "It's still going to be a little while off before becoming a commercial proposition."

Philips had been showing off its 3D solutions at trade fairs around the world and its technology is also on display at branches of Holland Casino. Its research in 3D was primarily focused towards developing screens and digital signs for businesses, but Philips has been forced to put those plans on the back burner as well.
