New-look Ubuntu Linux launched
Posted on 24 Apr 2009 at 12:56
Ubuntu 9.04 (aka Jaunty Jackalope) is available to download today. Canonical, the company behind the Linux distribution, has also introduced a netbook version of the operating system. This can be downloaded onto a flash drive so that you can try it out before deciding to install it onto a hard disk.
Jaunty Jackalope has a new interface with a new menu system that Canonical claims is easier to use. It also has faster boot times, with Canonical claiming that it can boot within 25 seconds on most netbooks and high-end desktops. The company said that installing Ubuntu 9.04 should take less than 25 minutes on a "typical computer".
Alerts about new emails, instant messages and program notifications have been made consistent across applications, with notification icons popping up on the launch bar. The distribution also includes GNOME 2.26, which means that this version of Ubuntu includes new tools such as the Brasero CD/DVD burning tool.
The open source community is now developing the next version, dubbed Karmic Koala, which promises to give Ubuntu's interface another new look.
