Virgin debuts West Coast Wi-Fi
Posted on 29 Apr 2009 at 10:59
Virgin Trains has begun offering Wi-Fi internet access on trains running on its West Coast Mainline routes.
The service will initially be available on Pendolino trains running between London, the Midlands and the North West before being extended to Super Voyager trains in the summer.
Unlike National Express, which operates the East Coast line, Virgin will not be providing free access, except for First Class passengers.
The rest can pay from 75p for 10 minutes up to £20 for unlimited access. Because T-Mobile is providing the infrastructure for the service, any credit purchased onboard can be used at any T-Mobile hotspot, and vice versa.
Virgin is promising “broadband speeds”, but is blocking access to some “bandwidth heavy” content, including the BBC iPlayer and other recorded or live television content.
For more information see Virgin’s Onboard Wi-Fi page and the FAQ.
