Revealed: How fast UK broadband really is
Posted on 11 May 2009 at 15:52
There's still a few weeks left to take our broadband survey, if you haven't already, to find out if your broadband connection is up to scratch compared to the rest of the country.
In terms of speed, from the results we've got already, that means a home broadband connection of 5.05Mbit/s. This figure is the average of every tested broadband connection to date, and just over 1Mbit/s from last year's average of 3.961Mbit/s. The increase in speed is mainly down to slower broadband speeds being dropped by ISPs in favour of packages that offer at least 8MBit/s.
This year we've also been asking about mobile broadband and can reveal that the average download speed attained my mobile surfers is 1.13Mbit/s. This includes tests from people all of the country, so is an indication of the speed you can expect while travelling, not the fastest speed that you can get.
There's still time to take part by filling out our online survey. To say thank you, you'll be entered into a prize draw to win a Shuttle PC worth £1,100. We'll bring you the full results of the survey and our detailed analysis in the September issue of Shopper on sale Thursday July 16.
