Cut-price Windows 7—while stocks last

Microsoft is offering free and cut-price upgrades to persuade PC users to install Windows 7 when the new version of its operating system is released in October.
Anyone buying a PC running Vista after 26 June can get a free upgrade to the new OS. Everyone else will be able to pre-order the software starting 15 July for reduced prices “while stocks last”. The company hasn’t said how many copies that amounts to, but has revealed that Windows 7 Home Premium will be available for £49.99 instead of the full price of £79.99, while similar discounts will be available for the Professional and Ultimate editions.
Mac users will do even better. Apple will charge just $29 for Snow Leopard when it is released in September, with the UK price likely to sit somewhere between £20 and £25.
Mac users also have three ways of running Windows 7: Apple’s free Boot Camp software lets you reboot your Mac as a PC, while virtualisation apps from Parallels and VM Ware will run the Microsoft OS in a window alongside OS X.
But like PC users, you will have to ensure that all your Windows data is backed up before installing the new software. Windows 7 requires a clean installation and does preserve files, settings or applications.
