Six out of ten firms have no plans for Windows 7

Despite the huge fanfare and anticipation surrounding Windows 7, a survey has revealed that six out of ten firms have no plans to upgrade to what is arguably Microsoft's best operating system to date.
Just five per cent of the 1,000 US firms who responded to the survey conducted by Scriptlogic said that they'd deploy Windows 7 by the end of this year. A further 34 per cent of businesses plan to deploy the new OS by the end of 2010.
Many businesses decided to skip Vista completely and so this is disheartening news for Microsoft. However, it doesn't appear to be due to a lack of quality as 42 per cent of those surveyed said that time and money were the deciding factors.
Interestingly though, 39 per cent raised questions over application compatibility, suggesting that businesses aren't yet convinced that Windows 7's new XP Mode will allow legacy software to be used. It could be that a lot of their machines don't support virtualization technology - a requirement for XP Mode - though, as a lot of Intel's and AMD's cheaper processors aren't fully featured in this regard.
Only 8.4 per cent were concerned about the operating system itself or the migration process.
The recession is clearly having an impact even though the banks, the Government and car manufacturers are telling us that the recession is nearly over.
