Virgin cuts 50Mbit broadband to under £30
Posted on 15 Jul 2009 at 17:52
Virgin has announced that it is dropping the price of its 50Mbit/sec broadband package down to £28 per month from 1 September.
The offer will be available to new and existing customers who opt for a phone line as well as the broadband internet service. Those who want broadband on its own will pay £38 a month.
The broadband provider says that the price cuts come after it completed its DOCSIS 3 network, which has tripled the bandwidth available to the company.
"The synergies and cost efficiencies of completing work on the entire network means we can pass these savings onto our customers," said a Virgin spokesperson. "It's not an introductory offer or anything like that."
According to Virgin, the high-speed service will be available to around 12 million customers in the UK.
In addition to this, Virgin said that the network upgrade will enable it to trial a range of services with much faster upload speeds up to 10Mbit/sec. "In addition to trialling the technical capabilities of the DOCSIS 3 network, the trial will explore the demand for higher upstream speeds for bandwidth hungry families, on services such as video conferencing, multiplayer gaming and home working," said a statement from the ISP.
Virgin stopped short of detailing exactly where the trial would take place and how many of its customers would be involved though.
