Apple releases 10.5.8 Leopard update
Posted on 6 Aug 2009 at 08:56
Apple has released the latest update for Leopard. Mac OS X 10.5.8 contains a series of patches to fix bugs and improve reliability and compatibility, and address a number of security flaws.
Among the changes are improved history search in Safari 4 and fixes for problems with importing large image and movie files from digital cameras and with extended startup times.
The update improves reliability in a number of areas, including Bluetooth, MobileMe, syncing, file sharing and joining AirPort networks. It also provides improved compatibility with some external, USB hard drives and support for additional camera raw formats.
Among the 18 security vulnerabilities that the update addresses, are issues with MobileMe, where signing out may not remove all credentials, and with laptops with multitouch trackpads, where four-finger gestures can be used to gain access to an apparently locked machine.
The update also contains all the recent security updates.
Mac OS X 10.5.8 is available via Software Update or from support.apple.com/downloads; for details see About the Mac OS X v10.5.8 Update and About the security content of Security Update 2009-003 / Mac OS X v10.5.8.
If past experience is any indicator, then Apple is likely to release at least one more Leopard update, which will roughly coincide with the release of Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) to ensure compatibility with the two versions of the operating system. Apple released such updates to coincide with both the Tiger and Leopard releases.
