Snow Leopard poses problems for popular programs

Adobe Photoshop Elements users should hold off upgrading to Snow Leopard, according to unofficial tests which suggest that the photo editing and managing app does not work with the new version of OS X.
Adobe announced yesterday that its Creative Suite 4 (CS4) applications are all compatible with Snow Leopard and has since revealed that Photoshop CS3 also plays nicely with the new OS.
As Elements is based on the CS3 version of Photoshop, there are clearly grounds for expecting it to work.
That is the view of Barbara Brundage, author of Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac: The Missing Manual: “On the whole I would say that if PS CS3 can run, so can PSE 6, since they share the same code base.”
However Adobe has yet to respond to requests for more information and until it does, anyone relying on Elements may be best advised to stick to their current version of OS X.
On a brighter note, there appear to be no serious problems with Adobe Lightroom, one user reporting that performance is much improved.
Other applications and software that are said to be incompatible with Snow Leopard include Safari plugins, Google Gears and “maintenance” tools such as Cocktail, Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx and TinkerTool.
For other applications, developers’ websites or blogs—generally provide up-to-date information. Applications with known compatibility issues for which updates are imminent include Cyberduck, iStat Menus and MenuMeters, while Rogue Amoeba is promising an updated Instant Hijack component for its audio apps: Airfoil, Nicecast and Audio Hijack Pro.
Barebones says that its applications—including BBEdit, Yojimbo, Text Wrangler and the now free Mailsmith—are all compatible.
Quark has confirmed that the recent QuarkXPress 8.1 update included Snow Leopard support and does “not foresee any issues” that will prevent QuarkXPress 7 from running.
