Tesco releases free iPhone app to help shoppers
Posted on 15 Oct 2009 at 13:14
Tesco has developed software for the iPhone that will let customers quickly find the products they want. Whether it's wasabi Peas, pickled ginger or breadcrumbs, everyone knows what it's like to search an aisle for seemingly hours for a product, just to find out that it's either out-of-stock, tucked away on the bottom shelf or on an entirely different aisle altogether.
These days of "can't see it for looking" are numbered for Tesco customers who have iPhones, though. The supermarket's Tesco Branch & Product Finder application acts like an in-store sat nav. It's based on the same technology that www.tesco.com staff use to pick customers' online orders. It locates a nearby store and guides customers to the exact shelf where the product they want is displayed.
Nick Lansley, head of research and development at Tesco, said: "The application is genuinely unique and useful. I've road-tested it myself in stores from Hendon to Holyhead and I'm delighted with how easy it is to use. I found everything from a brand of premium cider to Basmati rice immediately. Apps are great fun and this one is just the start of how we can use technology to make the shopping experience easier and easier."
The free application is available at the Apple iTunes App Store. For customers without the technology, old-fashioned Staff Nav is on hand as ever and customer assistants remain happy to help.
