Ubuntu 9.10 is released

The final version of Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) has been released for free download.
The new version of the popular Linux distribution adds a raft of new features and improvements that will make it faster to boot and use.
Firefox 3.5 is included by default, where as 9.04 came with version 3 and had to be upgraded using the command line Ubuntuzilla application.
Pidgin, the multiple IM client, has been replaced by Empathy. However, for fans of Pidgin (like us), you can still install this software using the application manager.
The new Software Center gives the old Add/Remove Applications an overhaul and makes it easier to find and install open source software.
Ubuntu One integration means that you get 2GB of free online storage. Upgrades can be bought cheaply, and 50GB of storage costs $10 (around £6) a month. The service lets you synchronise files between multiple Ubuntu computers. If you need to synchronise files with Windows, too, a different service such as Drop Box may be a better choice.
Users of Ubuntu 9.04 can upgrade to 9.10 by running Update Manager from the System, Administration menu; an alternative CD can also be downloaded. New users can simply download the ISO CD image from the official Ubuntu website.
