Microsoft brings down Windows XP with security updates
Posted on 12 Feb 2010 at 15:45
Windows XP users have been dealt a severe blow after a patch delivered through Windows update blue-screened the operating system and prevented it from starting even in Safe Mode.
Users complained in their droves on a Microsoft user forum, after finding that their computers were inoperable.
"Something happened to me. I think there is something seriously wrong with the update. I can't even open in safe mode," said one message poster.
Microsoft tracked down the problem to update KB977165, and told users that to uninstall this patch they should boot from the installation CD to access the recovery console. Full instructions on removing the offending patch can be found on the Microsoft help forum.
However, there are no instructions on what to do if your computer was shipped without the recovery console installed or a full installation CD.
