Making a will is like going to the dentist's: it can be painful, complex, and expensive, but it's nothing like as bad as what can happen if you don't bother.

Now, nobody sane goes in for home dentistry. And trying to draw up a complicated will without legal advice is a great way of turning your afterlife into a costume drama. But if all you need is a simple document to make sure that your family will be OK, a home will-making kit might turn out to be great value.

LawPack have been selling paper kits for years. This electronic one is no fancier. What you get for your £10 is a handful of forms supplied as Microsoft Word documents, together with tutorials and examples to help you fill them out. There are no bells, no whistles - but, being electronic, it does allow you to go through as many drafts as you like.

The tutorials are clear, if plain, and mostly jargon-free. The forms cover England, Scotland and Wales; wills with children and without. And having them load into Word makes them flexible, as well as easy to use. But it also means this isn't a program for Microsoft's opponents: because of the way the forms are created, you can't import them into other word processors.

If you get stuck, there's a legal helpline - but we don't advise you to call it. Calls cost a whopping £1.50 a minute - £90 an hour! Better to go straight to your solicitor. The same is true if you have a lot to give away, or a tangled family, or if you're nervous about following legal instructions. For the rest of us, though, Last Will and Testament is a cheap way to some vital peace of mind.
