The internet makes it possible to monitor news and information from across the world with unprecedented ease.

You can read articles from thousands of newspapers and magazines, as well as internet news providers and weblogs, without so much as walking to the newsagents.

With all this information, though, comes a new problem for the would-be informed: how to keep track of it all without having to spend all day checking dozens of websites. The Newwws is a small utility designed to negate this problem by keeping you up to date with the new articles on your favourite internet news sources while you work.

After installing The Newwws, your first task is to select the sources you want to keep track of. A huge list of preset sources is included, sorted into categories such as sport, business and financial, and entertainment, but the ability to add your own preferred news sources is more useful. Any news web page can be added from Internet Explorer simply by selecting a new 'Monitor in the Newwws' option from the Tools menu. A lot of online news is published in a ready-made RSS news stream, and The Newwws can read this form of information without any training at all.

Once your sources are set up, there are two ways to keep track of the news: the ticker and the watch. The ticker is a scrolling list of headlines from your sources that can scroll either down the side of the screen or, more usefully, at the top above the title bar of any applications you use. The watch is a pop-up window that shows you the latest updates.

The Newwws is easy to use and an excellent way to keep up with the headlines throughout the day. The price is a little high, but this is simple, smart software.
