Our Rating 5 stars out of 5

Developed to help secondary school-age kids with all their homework, this nifty piece of software is simple to use.

Its features range from an atlas, dictionary and thesaurus to a historical timeline and report-compiler - just about everything a schoolchild needs to create that winning report or essay. But arguably the most useful feature of Homework Helper is its wealth of authoritative, informative articles - just as you'd expect from one of the world's best-known encyclopedias. Articles are easy to find, and just as simple to understand. Even the most obscure information is never more than a few mouse-clicks away.

Homework Helper includes a number of useful activities to encourage further research into a range of subjects, such as quizzes, subject guides and Web-based research exercises. It's all very practical stuff, designed to help kids develop the sort of research skills that could see them top of the class. Encyclopedias have long been used as a starting point for research on essays and coursework, but what makes this one so special is that it's specifically designed for use by kids - it looks smart and stylish, is easy to navigate and contains a dizzying amount of information. In the average home with teenage kids, this would be a much-used tool. The only problem might be getting distracted by the thousands of fascinating facts on offer.
