Our Rating
Seagate wasn't able to supply us with a 500GB disk for this test, but it did send this 750GB Barracuda 7200.10.
We decided to see if it was as quick as the 500GB disks, and whether it could be better value. The Barracuda's performance in our benchmarks was somewhat disappointing. It was the second fastest disk in our sequential write test - although it couldn't quite keep up with Samsung's HD501LJ - and produced the best result in our sequential-read benchmark. Once we moved on to the random-access tests, though, things started to go wrong. It was the only disk to run our random write test slower than 30MB/sec, while the Western Digital Raid edition stormed ahead at almost 60MB/sec, and its performance in the random read test was also the worst in the group.
Hard disks with the largest capacities are often disproportionately expensive, and this is certainly the case with the Barracuda. It costs almost £250 including VAT, and is the only internal disk in this group to cost more than 30p per gigabyte of storage.
So unless you want to cram three terabytes of storage into your Mac Pro by fitting four 750GB disks, you would be much better off buying one of the 500GB models than the Seagate Barracuda 7200.10.
