Our Rating
Emprex's D250PE hard disk enclosure allows you to connect a 2½in PATA laptop hard disk to your computer by USB. A version accommodating newer SATA disks is in the pipeline.
The black and chrome case looks attractive and feels sturdy. Fitting a hard disk isn't difficult, but the instructions could be better illustrated and the enclosure can be tricky to open. A screwdriver is included.
We fitted the D250PE with a 60GB Hitachi disk, and it was a bit slower in our file transfer tests than we expected, so it's not ideal if performance is your top priority. One bonus is that the Emprex can encrypt your files so they can't be accessed without a password, even if you remove the disk and connect it to your PC using another enclosure.
This could be useful for some, but the uninspiring performance means it's worth buying only if you have to use a PATA disk.
