Our Rating
LG's BE06LU10 is an external USB Blu-ray writer that can play Blu-ray and HD DVD movies.
The bundled PowerDVD Ultra software played both types of disc flawlessly. It supports surround sound, unlike some playback programs bundled with optical drives, so you won't need to pay extra to get the most from movies.
The BE06LU10 was quick at burning Blu-ray discs, taking just over 23 minutes to write a 25GB BD-R disc and 39 minutes and 20 seconds to fill a rewritable Blu-ray disc. Its speed when burning 8.5GB DVDs is unimpressive compared to dedicated DVD writers, but it did come close to matching its quoted 4X. It managed around 9X when writing single-layer DVDs, which is much slower than its stated 16X and, again, slower than dedicated DVD writers.
This is a decent drive, but buy it only if your computer can't accommodate internal upgrades. The BE06LU10's internal counterpart, the GGW-H20L, costs £66 less. If you regularly burn DVDs, you'll have to wait a long time, or buy a separate DVD writer.
