Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500GB review
The Scorpio Blue isn't the first 2½in 500GB laptop hard disk we've seen; that was Hitachi's Travelstar 5K500 (What's New, Shopper 245).
The Travelstar's 12.5mm height was too big for most laptop's drive bays, but the 9.5mm Scorpio will fit in any laptop with a SATA connector.
The 500GB capacity rivals that of hard disks in some desktop PCs. Its performance when copying large files was impressive. Reading small files, it managed 60.03MB/s, but when writing small files it managed only 38.82MB/s.
Unlike some 2½in laptop SATA hard disks, the Scorpio didn't reduce the battery life of our laptop. It also costs a low 20p per gigabyte. Its performance writing small files could be better, but it's great if you need to store a lot of files on your laptop.
