640GB laptop hard disks available now

You'll soon be able to fit up to 640GB of storage in your laptop thanks to the latest 2.5in SATA hard disks.

640GB laptop hard disks have been announced by both Western Digital and Samsung. Both the 640GB SpinPoint M7 from Samsung and the 640GB Scorpio Blue from Western Digital have a spindle speed of 5400rpm, 8MB of cache and use a pair of 320GB platters. They're there no thicker than existing laptop disks and should fit in the majority of laptops, unlike Western Digital's previously announced 750GB and 1TB laptop hard disks .

Even if you can't or don't want to replace your laptop's existing internal disk, these announcements mean that 640GB portable USB hard disks will also be available soon. Western Digital also announced a 640GB version of its My Passport Essential portable USB disk. We'd be interested to see when Seagate, Hitachi and Toshiba bring out their own high capacity laptop disks.

The 640GB versions of Samsung's SpinPoint, Western Digital's Scoprio Blue and My Passport Essential will cost around £90, or around 14p per gigabyte, and will be available shortly. We'll bring you full reviews as soon as we get them into our Labs.
