Samsung's latest portable DVD writer has a tray-loading instead of a slot-loading mechanism. This doesn't look as sleek, but it will work with mini 8cm-diameter discs.

A two-plug USB cable is included, so it can be used without an external power adaptor, which is convenient for mobile use. A useful extra is the included copy of Nero Recode. This utility lets you fit a two-layer DVD movie on a single-layer disc and re-encode your movie into a MPEG4 file.

The SE-S084 couldn't reach its claimed write speeds, but was still quick at burning single- and two-layer DVDs. 4.7GB discs were written at 5X, while 8.5GB discs were written at just under 4X.

Samsung's Super Writemaster SE-S084 is the best portable DVD writer we've seen, and the ideal companion for a netbook. It's inexpensive, quick and doesn't need an external power adaptor, so it wins our Best Buy award.
