iPad 3 tipped for quad-core, retina display and LTE

Apple's next-generation iPad tablet could prove to be a serious upgrade, if claims made in a report late last week prove true, with a high-resolution display and quad-core processor on the cards.
According to sources speaking to business watcher Bloomberg, Apple's iPad 3 tablet is already being produced, ahead of a planned March launch, and includes Long-Term Evolution (LTE) support for high-speed mobile networks, an upgraded retina-display-like high-resolution touch-screen, and a quad-core processor.
That latter bears explaining: Apple's current-generation mobile products use a dual-core ARM-based processor built to Apple's specifications by Samsung; rival products, like Asus's popular Transformer Prime tablet, however, use a quad-core ARM-based processor instead.
By doubling the number of cores, it's possible to run more applications at the same time without any slowdown; further, many manufacturers - including Nvidia, creator of the Tegra 3 quad-core processor found at the heart of the Asus Transformer Prime - claim that a quad-core processor can be more power-efficient than a dual-core version, leading to longer battery life.
With a clearer, higher-resolution display, a significantly faster processor, and high-speed mobile network support - although the latter is unlikely to come to the UK, where no large-scale LTE deployments are yet available - the iPad 3 could prove to be a great success.
Apple, for its part, is refusing to comment on the rumour, leaving fans waiting until the supposed March launch date to find out if Bloomberg's sources are right.
