Asus Memo Pad HD7 revealed, just $149 for 16GB
Asus has unveiled the Memo Pad HD7, its latest cut-price Android tablet that undercuts its own Nexus 7 device to become one of the cheapest on the market
Not content with the already stellar budget Nexus 7, Asus raised its game – and lowered the price – of its latest entry-level tablet for its Computex press conference. The Memo Pad HD7 will cost as little as $129 when it launches later this year.
The 7in tablet is powered by a quad-core ARM Cortex A7 processor, which we’ll have to wait to put through its paces – on paper, it should cope well with the slightly older Android version 4.0 it runs, and it seemed smooth enough when swiping through home screens.
The 1,280×800 IPS display could easily be the same one used for the Nexus 7 – it looked bright, vibrant and sharp from behind the glass box Asus had locked it in.
Where the Memo Pad differs from the Nexus is expandable storage – the MicroSD card slot will let you add up to 64GB of extra capacity to the $129 8GB model. If you have a little extra cash, the 16GB version will apparently cost $149.
As well as a front-facing 1.2-megapixel webcam, it will also include a 5-megapixel rear camera with autofocus – albeit without a flash. Even so, if you’re a snap-happy tablet user, this alone could be enough to convince you to pick the Memo Pad over a Nexus 7.
The Memo Pad HD7 will be available in four colours when it launches later in the year – black, white, yellow and pink. The glossy finish marks a departure from previous Asus 7in tablets, which used rubberised plastic in the case of the Nexus 7. Quite when you’ll be able to buy one, or what price you’ll have to pay in pounds, remains to be seen.
