Asus to launch Eee Tablet note-taker, eReader
Posted on 2 Jun 2010 at 11:38
The world of the eReader looks to be getting a little crowded, with Asus throwing its hat into the fray with the Eee Tablet.
Despite the name, this isn't Asus' attempt to unseat the iPad: instead, it's a device which aims to combine the functionality of an eReader with a touch-sensitive display for note taking and even sketching.
The Eee Tablet features an extremely sensitive 2,540dpi-resolution stylus-based touch panel - providing, the company claims, a pen-and-paper-like experience for the user.
The illusion of truly making marks is enhanced by the display: while at first glance the Eee Tablet appears to be fitted with a traditional e-ink electrophoretic screen, the 64-level greyscale display is actually a backlight-free LCD - which offers a significantly higher refresh rate, albeit at the cost of a rather limited ten hours of battery life.
WiFi connectivity is included as standard, and the internal storage can be expanded via a microSD card. Interestingly, Asus suggests that "additional applications" will be available to download, as well as the more traditional e-books and magazines.
Firm details of the device are not yet available, but we've heard that it will be launched in the UK this September at an as-yet unknown price.
