Sony's upcoming Xperia Z Ultra, a phablet designed to sit between Sony's Xperia Z smartphone and Xperia Tablet Z, appears to have leaked online ahead of an official announcement.

Also known as the Xperia ZU, the handset seems to be Sony's attempt at extending the Xperia range into phablets as well as tablets and smartphones. According to pre-release details leaked to Taiwanese-language site ePrice, the Xperia Z Ultra will be based around a 6.44in, IPS display with a 1,080x1,920 resolution. That's the same resolution as the smaller Xperia Z, but the larger screen brings the overall pixel density to 342 pixels per inch (PPI).

According to the site, it will be powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor running at a potential 2.2GHz, which is a significant improvement over both the Xperia Z and Xperia Tablet Z. 2GB of RAM is also expected, along with 16GB of storage. You should be able to add up to 64GB through a micro-SD card slot.

Previous rumours had suggested that the device would include a 20-megapixel rear camera, but ePrice has said that it will instead use an eight-megapixel Exmor RS sensor on the rear and a 1.3 megapixel Exmor R sensor on the front. As with the Xperia Z and Xperia Tablet Z, the Xperia Z Ultra is at least partially waterproof: the site says it will be operate at a metre under water for half an hour without damage.

Unlike Samsung's Galaxy Note phablets, Sony is apparently not planning to bundle a stylus with the Xperia Z Ultra, but it could support an optional official Sony accessory as well as third-party devices. One potential feature is the ability to place a sheet of paper over the display, write on the paper with a normal pencil and have notes automatically recognised and saved by the handset.

Sony has not yet confirmed the Xperia Z Ultra's existence, but a press event scheduled for the 4th of July in Paris, which show an Xperia Tablet Z-like side profile and a metal stylus pointing to a handwritten note, suggests it certainly has something in the works.
