Plex revamps Roku player – available now

New Plex app for Roku

Plex completely overhauls its player for Roku, improving the interface and making it easier to find media

Although Plex is one of the biggest apps on the Roku platform, the agreement all round is that it’s long overdue an overhaul. Well, it’s good news, as from today that’s exactly what you get, with a brand new Plex app available now.

There are plenty of big changes, with the new user interface the most obvious. Slicker and easier to use, the new UI brings the Roku version in line with Plex on other platforms, such as the Xbox, PlayStation and TV clients. Bigger images and a broader view of video content makes the new version of Plex look a lot fresher and cleaner than the old version.

Continuing to expand and extend the content available, the new version Plex also brings in trailers, behind the scenes clips and rich art to complement a media collection. Plex is also promising that the new app will be faster and smoother than the old one. At launch, the app will be available through the Plex Pass preview private Roku channel, going on general release soon after.

Currently, the player supports video and music playback, with trailers and the new discover interface. Photos, playlists and channels are not currently supported, but the company promises that they’re coming soon. Plex worked with the Roku community to create the new app, with user ljunkie, creator of the Rarflix Roku fork, developing the new version.

If you haven’t tried Plex yet, you should. With the server’s ability to transcode music and video, it’s the perfect way to play any file on any device. Read our guide on how to use Plex for more information.
