Asus has announced the introduction of a new entry in its O!Play range of media streamers, the O!Play TV Pro.

Designed to offer smart TV functionality to those who have yet to upgrade their sets, the set-top box promises PVR-like functionality that gives it the ability to record and play back video in a variety of different formats.

Using an in-built DVB-T digital TV tuner, the new O!Play has the usual functionality: seven-day electronic programme guide, recording onto an internal 3.5-inch hard drive and time-shifting are all included. However, there's no support listed for DVB-T2 HD TV, a major stumbling block for UK buyers.

For playback, the new O!Play supports over fifty formats including ISO and MKV containers, MP4, H.264 and even 3D content in H.264 MV TS, M2TS and BD-ISO formats.

It's the 'smart' functionality which sets the latest O!Play apart from its predecessors, however. Using Asus' O!Easy software, the O!Play TV Pro allows users to share TV programmes and other media on Facebook, stream content from a desktop or laptop PC directly to the TV, wirelessly stream content from mobile devices and instantly access videos stored on USB drives or SD, MMC. MemoryStick or xD cards.

Connected to a home network via Wi-Fi or gigabit Ethernet, the O!Play TV Pro also offers access to online services including Facebook, YouTube, DailyMotion, Flickr and Picasa, while Asus promises regular updates to add additional sites to the list.

The O!PLay TV Pro is due to launch soon, with pricing yet to be confirmed.
