Eyecare Trust warns of 3D pains

A new study reveals that up to 12 per cent of the UK's population could have difficulty making use of 3D TV and video game technologies due to poor binocular vision.
The study, carried out by The Eyecare Trust and reported over on gaming industry site MCV, warns that the technology used in films like Avatar and on Nintendo's up-coming 3DS hand-held console could spell pain for a surprisingly large percentage of the population.
Speaking about the study, charity chairman Dharmesh Patel stated that, for the 12 per cent of the UK's population that have problems with binocular vision, the use of 3D technologies could "create really bad headaches and aches behind the eyes". He did also say that the Trust doesn't believe that there are any long term effects - if you start to get a headache, simply stop looking at the screen.
With 3D already proving to be a hit in cinemas and an increasing presence in many homes, with broadcasters such as Sky experimenting with the technology as well as companies including Sony adding support for 3D displays to their consoles, the Trust's warning could see around six million people left with the choice of constant headaches or no 3D TV - and it's a story that Patel believes will be repeated throughout the world's population.
Although adoption of 3D technologies looks set to skyrocket in the near future, with so many likely to be afflicted with headaches and blurred vision there could be some very disappointed households this Christmas.
