Samsung LE32A436 review

This is the cheapest model here to include three HDMI inputs.
Input selection could be easier, though, as hitting the relevant button makes the TV cycle laboriously through its inputs rather than displaying a list of options. Otherwise, the controls and onscreen menus are straightforward. The eight-day EPG shows only six channels at a time, but finds room for additional information and a picture-in-picture display of the channel you're currently watching. Freeview image quality was among the best here, with the digital processing doing a superb job of reducing MPEG2 compression artefacts without sacrificing detail. The accompanying sounds lacked bass, but a quick tweak with the custom EQ settings remedied this.
Testing with high-definition video sources revealed sumptuous, flattering colours and a stunning level of detail. Close scrutiny of 1080p sources revealed that the 32in TVs with true 1080p native resolutions were able to resolve more detail, but Samsung's impressive processing produced an image that seemed just as sharp, if not sharper, at normal viewing distances. Compression artefacts were a little exaggerated, but these tend not to be intrusive on HD footage so it wasn't really a problem.
Viewing angles were more troubling. At around 30° from head on, our greyscale test showed some yellow discolouration in the midtones. We also found that motion was occasionally a little bumpy in some of our interlaced test material, but the problem was rare enough to be insignificant.
The same image-quality traits extended to PC use when connected via a DVI-to-HDMI or a VGA cable. The picture was sharp, bright and vibrant. The bright midtones common to nearly all the TVs weren't ideal for graphics editing, but they flattered photos and videos.
In terms of image quality, the LE32A436's positives far outweigh its negatives. Despite its modest specifications and price, it's one of the best TVs in this round-up. If you want a great TV without spending silly money then this is the one to get.
