Update: Sony Vaio Y Series (Y11M1E/S) review
Posted on 25 May 2010 at 11:38
The Sony Vaio Y11M1E/S is one of the best ultra-portable laptops we've seen recently winning a Best Buy award thanks to its excellent battery life, integrated 3G modem and comfortable keyboard. Unfortunately, the specification has changed slightly since our review.
The processor in our review unit was a 1.3GHz Core 2 Duo SU7300, but shipping units have a 1.3GHz Intel Pentium Dual Core SU4100 processor instead. The only difference between the two is that the SU7300 has a 3MB L2 cache, while the SU4100 has a slightly smaller 2MB L2 cache. In our tests of other laptops equipped with these processors, the performance difference is negligible.
Our review sample came with 64-bit Windows 7 Professional, but shipping units only have 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium. Professional has more features than Home Premum, but many will only be of limited interest to most users. These include built-in encryption, the ability to act as a remote desktop host and the Windows XP virtualisation mode.
Neither of these changes changes the fact that the Vaio Y11M1E/S is still an excellent ultra-portable laptop and retains its Best Buy award. We have updated our review to reflect these changes.
