Firefox 3.5 is now officially the world's most popular browser in use, according to data collected by research firm StatCounter.
The result was close with Firefox 3.5 just pipped Internet Explorer to the lead spot, with just over 21 per cent market share. However, the figures are for a specific version of the browser. If you look at the brand figures (i.e. any version of a browser), Internet Explorer has the lead with 56 per cent market share compared to Firefox's 32 per cent.
The figures also vary from country to country. In the UK IE 8 is the most popular browser with 30 per cent market share, closely followed by IE 7's 22 per cent; Firefox slips in behind at 18 per cent.
The charts show that Google's Chrome has a long way to go to catch up with the big boys. Both in the UK and worldwide Chrome has less than six per cent market share.
