The Sony WF-1000XM3 earbuds used to top our list of the best wireless earphones you can buy. Then they were superseded by the WF-1000XM4 (Sony hasn’t got any better at giving products memorable names in the interim, alas.)
But the last generation earbuds are still a brilliant set of earphones and well worth considering – and doubly so at their Black Friday price, which is still live. Right now, at Amazon, you can buy the Sony WF-1000XM3 for just £99 from Amazon. That’s a saving of £119 off their original RRP, and £12 lower than they’ve ever been.
We gave the Sony WF-1000XM3 a five-star Best Buy rating when we reviewed them, and they’re still great today, offering superb sound quality, a stable wireless connection and fantastic noise cancellation.
“Under most circumstances I’d only dish out Expert Reviews’ Best Buy award to a faultless product,” wrote Chris Miniasians in his review. “But the Sony WF-1000XM3 have industry-leading ANC performance and offer a great all-round package, so it would feel wrong to give them anything lower than a perfect score.”
But that was in 2019, so what are you missing out on by not getting the more recent Sony WF-1000XM4 instead? Better sound quality via high-resolution audio, better noise cancellation, a longer battery life and water resistance. The last of these may be essential for those looking to take their new earbuds to the gym, but everyone else will probably be fine without.
In fact, given the WF-1000XM4 will currently set you back twice the price, the Sony WF-1000XM3 will be more than enough for most people. If you can deal with the minor drawbacks, then you’re unlikely to be disappointed.
