Sky set to bump up customers’ broadband and TV prices

Bad news, Sky customers: the broadband and television provider is set to hike the cost of certain broadband and TV packages from 1 April 2020.

The prices rises affect four aspects of the service, and it’s possible that you could be hit by more than one at the same time, though the company says the average increase will be £3 per month.

First of all, Sky Broadband Essentials customers will see an extra £2 on their monthly bill, taking the whole thing to £22 per month.

In terms of TV, Sky is adding an extra £2 to the entertainment package and an extra £1 to multi-screen, making the prices £24 and £14 respectively. Finally, the HD upgrade gains £1, jumping from £5 to £6 per month.

If you’re impacted by these, Sky says it will be contacting you by email or post between Thursday 20 February and Wednesday 25 March to confirm.

“We know price increases are never welcome, so we try to keep prices down while continuing to bring customers the best entertainment all in one place, leading customer service and even more flexibility to choose the package that best suits them,” a Sky spokesperson said.

You may feel differently, of course – and for those affected by the broadband price rise, you should be able to leave without penalty thanks to Ofcom rules about mid-contract price rises. Just contact the company within 30 days of receiving the letter or email, and you’re home free. Good luck, and be sure to check out our roundup of the best UK broadband providers out there. 

TV subscribers, however, are out of luck thanks to the different terms and conditions. Still, it may be worth phoning up and haggling – especially if you’re coming to the end of your contract. Just be aware that Ofcom won’t have your back on this one, alas.
