Disney Plus will officially launch on Sky in the UK

Disney and Sky have signed a “multi-year deal” that may also include Now TV

UPDATE: Disney Plus is out now in the UK. That means Sky Q customers can access Disney Plus on their Sky Q boxes, courtesy of the semi-exclusive deal detailed below. If you’re not sure about the service, feel free to check out our key Disney Plus pages; they explain both what the service actually is AND which films/TV shows you can watch on it.

Disney Plus will be launching on the Sky Q box in the UK and Ireland. The House of Mouse signed a multi-year deal with Sky this week that grants the latter the right to host the Disney Plus streaming service on Sky Q when it launches on 24 March. Reports also indicate that Disney Plus will be coming to Now TV boxes – although not at launch.

This announcement confirms a rumour that has been circulating since January of this year. At the time, it was believed that Sky was looking to sign an exclusive agreement with Disney, in the hopes of becoming the only service capable of embedding Disney Plus content within its Sky Q/Now TV menus – forcing competitors BT and Virgin Media to rely on the app.

As it stands, however, this is not quite the case. While Sky Q customers will be able to browse Disney Plus content alongside content from the likes of Sky Atlantic, Netflix and Now TV, the deal is reportedly not exclusive, meaning there’s still an opportunity for similar agreements with other providers—mobile network O2 has recently secured a similar deal allowing its new and upgrading customers free access to Disney Plus for six months.

Sky Q customers can navigate to the Disney Plus app via their Sky Q box. Obviously, you’ll need a Disney Plus subscription, which can be purchased either separately as of 24 March, or via the Sky website from the end of April. We expect to see Disney Plus bundled with Sky subscriptions, a little like the current Sky Ultimate On Demand package that combines Sky Entertainment with Netflix and Sky Box Sets. Nothing is confirmed, however.

What we do know is that the deal includes a first-pay window for 20th Century films. In other words, Sky will be the first place you’ll be able to watch films like Le Mans ‘66 and Terminator: Dark Fate once they become available on TV.

Sky chief executive Jeremy Darroch said: “We’ve built a strong partnership with Disney over three decades and we’re pleased that our customers in the UK and Ireland can continue to enjoy their world-class content – all in one place on Sky Q.

“This is a great start to what is set to be another stellar year for Sky – in 2020 we’ll launch new channels and genres, start building Sky Studios Elstree and we’ve got brilliant new and returning originals coming too.”

Disney Plus launches in the UK on 24 March for £5.99/mth or £59.99/yr. If you sign up now, you can save £10 on an annual subscription.
