How to get free Xbox One games through your Xbox 360

Microsoft Xbox One

Build up a collection of free games before you've even bought an Xbox One

Microsoft is allowing Xbox 360 owners to build up a collection of free Xbox One games before they’ve even bought the next-generation console. The free games are on offer as part of Microsoft’s Games With Gold promotion, which delivers free downloads to subscribers to Xbox Live Gold.

Microsoft has now begun offering Xbox 360 owners the chance to claim Xbox One games, so that they have a library of free downloads waiting the moment they switch on their new console. So how do you get your hands on these freebies?

Fire up the Xbox 360 console and click on the Games With Gold tile, which should be visible on the home screen once you’re logged into Xbox Live. In there, you’ll find free downloads for both Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

If you click on an Xbox One title, you’ll be given the option to effectively reserve a game until you’ve got a new console (there’s obviously little point in physically downloading an Xbox One game to the 360, as you will have no means of playing it or transferring it to the new console).

When you sign into Xbox Live on your new Xbox One, you will be given the option to download any of the titles you’ve previously reserved. New free downloads are added every fortnight, so you can potentially build up a decent stock of games.

The Xbox One title on offer at the time of writing is Rayman Legends, an entertaining platform game which has a four-star rating from Xbox gamers. It’s also worth noting that Xbox 360 owners can pick up a free copy of Tomb Raider for their existing console at the time of writing.
