An inexpensive app for editing Word documents on the hoof.

The iPhone is much more than a mobile phone – that much we know – but since the launch of the App Store a little more than a year ago, the device’s true potential is still being explored by a plethora of developers.

Documents To Go aims to harness the iPhone’s power to enable you to open text, spreadsheet and presentation files from the Microsoft Office suite of applications when you’re on the move.

Just like Quickoffice Mobile Office Suite (see MacUser, 11 September 2009, p38), Documents To Go can read a variety of file formats, as well as edit and create .txt and .doc files. You can’t, however, edit Excel spreadsheets, unlike Quickoffice, although this is promised in a future update.

As for .doc files, Documents To Go provides all the basic functionality to make stylistic changes to Word documents, such as bolding up, italicising and underlining text, as well as adding bullet points.

Further, you can download a Desktop app for your Mac that will automatically sync your files over a wifi connection, ensuring you always have the most up-to-date file on both of your machines, which is a rather nice touch. Documents To Go is a very capable app, bringing the power to edit Word documents when you’re away from the office, and it’s keenly priced to boot. So if you need to edit on the hoof, you’re likely to find this app very useful indeed.
