If you look at the table below, the first thing you'll notice about Vonage is that it charges a hefty £27 setup fee, while nearly all the other services are free.
Although this is very expensive, it does include your first month's subscription fee and a VoIP adaptor. What's more, unlike other services Vonage doesn't leave you to choose your own hardware, and you don't have to move your broadband over to a Vonage-approved router. Instead, the company sends you a little black box that you plug into your current router.
Setup is simple: you enter your username and password, and that's about it. Once you've done that, you plug in your phone and you can start making calls.
The £7.99 monthly fee for the V-Plan 2 service is a little more expensive than most of the other services on offer, but it includes all your calls to landlines in the UK and 15 international destinations, covering most of Western Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand. Vonage fares less well on calls to UK mobiles, however. Calls cost 12p per minute at all times, which means you pay more for off-peak calls than you would if you called from BT's own broadband package.
For anyone who makes a lot of landline calls, Vonage's V-Plan 2 is a good deal, but don't use it to make lots of calls to UK mobiles or your bill will soon mount up.
