Nikon D800 could be released soon after D700 and D300s discontinued

Imaging specialist Nikon has officially discontinued its D700 full-frame and D300S DX-format digital SLR cameras.
Originally launched three and a half years ago as a top-end option for professionals looking to make the move to digital, Nikon's D700 has been a popular - if expensive - option but the company is now clearing the decks ahead of the launch of its replacement, the D800.
While not yet confirmed by Nikon, leaks regarding the D800 claim that the camea is set to feature a 36 megapixel full-frame sensor with 1080p video recording capabilities along with the company's Expeed 3 image processor, first seen in the Nikon 1 Series. All together, the camera is expected to offer a native ISO range of 100 to 6,400, expandable to 50 to 25,600.
Nikon is playing its cards close to its chest, however, refusing to comment on the rumours surrounding the D800. The move to discontinue the D700, however, suggests that a launch is imminent, with rumours pointing towards the CP+ Photography Show in Japan next month as a likely venue for a new product announcement.
The discontinuation of the D300S, however, has come as something of a surprise: while the D800 has long been rumoured as an impending replacement for the ageing D700, there have been no such rumours surrounding a suggested upgrade to the D300S.
As with the D700, the discontinuation of the D300S suggests that Nikon has a new model waiting in the wings; with no word on the rumour-mill about what that model might be, however, photographers who were pondering a purchase will be left on tenterhooks until an official product announcement is made.
