We're pleasantly surprised by Lindy's first premium headphones. While they’re too heavy to wear out and about, they sound fantastic for the home

Lindy isn’t the first name that comes to mind when you think of high-end consumer audio, but this may be about change if the company’s Premium Hi-Fi Headphones are anything to go by. The chunky, traditional looking headphones have thickly padded cups that entirely surround the ear. These are clamped tightly to the listener’s head by metal parts which slide outward from a padded headband. The weight of the cups can make them uncomfortable to wear for extended periods, particularly if you’re sitting upright. Consequently, these headphones are better suited to relaxed listening at home than wearing to drown out the world on a long train journey.

The three-metre long detachable cable is ideal to reach a PC or stereo as you lie back in comfort, while the cups’ closed drivers effectively block out background noise and keep your music contained. The headphones also come with a carrying case and screw-on adaptor to convert the 3.5mm stereo plug to 1/4in.

The headphones’ audio quality is fantastic. There was plenty of detail and the overall sound was well balanced, with a rich, solid bass and crisp top end. This could become a little too intense on some tracks, but it lent itself to screaming melodic guitar harmonies with a solid rhythmic backing. The mid-range was less emphatic, but it wasn’t muddy and vocals remained distinct. These aren’t the loudest headphones we’ve ever heard, but aren’t too weak to use with a phone or MP3 player. Connect them to a more powerful output and they chuck out plenty of noise.

These headphones’ weight and tightness makes them uncomfortable for extended listening while out and about, but they’re perfect if you want a pair of headphones for a traditional home hi-fi setup. They’re extremely good value, but the Shure SRH550DJ set is more versatile.
