Our Rating
The MK5055GSX isn't yet stocked in the UK as we go to press, but various online retailers are already listing it at prices around £105.
That makes it the most expensive 2?in disk on test, but the 500GB capacity provides some justification. The 0.6W power consumption when idle is lower than average, which should extend battery life a little, although all 2?in disks' power consumption are low so it won't make much of an impact on electricity bills.
Its performance was in the middle of the 2?in disks in our tests. Its large-file read speed of 71.8MB/s is the highlight, while 50MB/s to write them is a little below average. Its weakest area was in writing small files, at 30MB/s.
The five-year warranty is welcome, but Western Digital's 500GB Scorpio Blue is considerably faster and cheaper, which leaves little reason to buy this disk.
