Boombotix BoomBot2 review

Verdict:

This little speaker looks daft, but it's rugged, water resistant and sounds great

The Boombotix BoomBot2 (BB2) looks like a mock-up of an alien grey’s skull, but it's actually a rugged and portable Bluetooth speaker. Our review sample lacked a manual, which was annoying because pairing Bluetooth devices can be a bit fiddly, even if you're used to the technology.

Once connected, we were pleasantly surprised by the quality and volume of the sound produced by the speaker. It sounded good even at full volume on both speaker and mobile device. Bass frequencies were also clearly audible. This mono speaker isn't the ultimate hi-fi listening experience by any means, but it's clear, loud and well balanced.

We were also impressed with the BB2's SoundHub feature, which turns the BB2’s 3.5mm port into an output when you're connected via Bluetooth. This means you can connect and simultaneously play your music through any other speaker with a 3.5mm input. If you're not connected via Bluetooth, the 3.5mm port becomes an input. A neat retractable cable is supplied with the speaker.

The BB2 is water-resistant, with a quoted battery life of up to eight hours and a built-in belt clip, so you can use it on the move. There's also an optional bike mount that lets cyclists safely listen to music (and alert pedestrians to their presence) on the move.

It looks silly, but this is the ideal Bluetooth speaker for the active hipster in your life. Add the bike mount and it'll look great on their fixie bike, too.
